IBAN, which stands for International Bank Account Number, is a specific format for a bank account number agreed upon by various countries, primarily in Europe.

An IBAN contains information about its country and bank. Knowing the payee's IBAN is enough to correctly route the payment. SEPA payments can only be made to IBAN accounts, and other local payment methods in Europe may also require IBAN.
